The Zapata Ranch is owned by The Nature Conservancy. The property is a 103,000-acre bison and guest ranch located on the eastern wall of the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado. It borders the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, the newest National Park in the United States. The high desert grasslands, alpine forests, wetlands, sand dunes, creeks, and lush meadows offer one of the most scenic and ecologically diverse landscapes in the United States. In addition to our livestock operation, the ranch features working ranch vacations, educational programs centered on our bison herd, and active, ambitious conservation programs aimed at preserving the surrounding land and promoting its biodiversity.
Zapata Ranch offers extensive programs for guests to experience life on a working cattle ranch while enjoying high-end amenities and gourmet food. Guests enjoy comfortable lodge rooms at the historic Zapata ranch headquarters or housing. Wake up to a hot breakfast served in a rustic dining room before heading out on a morning horseback ride.
Located beneath the majestic 14,000-foot peaks of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains lies the Historic Zapata Ranch headquarters and lodge (established in the late 1800's). Elk, mule deer, migratory birds and black bear also call this area home.
The lodge is the original ranch homestead built in the 1800's. Once the ranch's main house, this log structure has been beautifully remodeled to incorporate a roomy and attractive indoor dining area with a fireplace and large windows along with a cozy sitting area.
The large deck adjacent to the dining and bar area is shaded by mature cottonwood trees and rounded out by a flower garden that allows for sweeping views of the property. The five lodge rooms are beautifully furnished and have an elegant Coloradoan decor that gives you a feel of home. All rooms have tiled bathrooms and views that are private, peaceful, and beautiful in any season.
For evening soaks after a long day of fun and riding, the hot tub (then needed) offers views of the sand dunes, and the mountains beyond which is just steps away
Just outside the lodge is the log cabin bunkhouse with five private rooms, each with a full bath and their own private entrance. One room features a suite with a separate living room and wood stove. All rooms are in top order and beautifully decorated along with large comfortable beds. Windows open wide for the fresh mountain air and the views of the natural gardens surrounding the Inn, dunes and mountains beyond.
The Stewart House
A fully-furnished home separated from the Inn by a lighted footpath, is ideal for extended family, friends or associates in a more private, secluded location. Each of the five private rooms has a full bath. The home features a fully-equipped kitchen, a living room with fireplace, a pool table, and a spacious dining area that can accommodate larger groups. The view from the living room windows and private patio provides a front row seat to Great Sand Dunes National Park and Crestone Peak, one of the most spectacular 14,000-foot peaks in the entire Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range.
